What She’s Known For
During her career, Alison has been involved in thousands of employment matters, many of which involved litigation. From this she developed an understanding about the importance of having a respectful and productive workplace, while recognizing the costs and toll on the business and its employees when these principles are not met.

She has tirelessly and pro-actively worked with many employees, members of management, and employers, to create a positive work environment and to resolve complex work problems.

Alison projects professionalism, with a balanced and friendly approach, in any area of her practice.

Practice Areas
Alison joined the firm in 2017 after spending almost 9 years as Vice-chair of the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO). Prior to her tenure with the HRTO, Alison spent 11 years as legal counsel with the LCBO and previously worked at several boutique labour and employment law firms. She has extensive appearance before a wide range of employment and labour related courts and tribunals.

During her time with the HRTO, Alison gained invaluable experience in workplace discrimination and harassment issues including adjudicating and mediating hundreds of human rights complaints. Alison’s vast experience makes her particularly adept at recognizing what is and is not harassment and discrimination, determining credibility, providing recommendations for remediation, and writing about sensitive issues.

Alison provides a number of key services including:
  • Mediations
  • Workplace management training including hiring, managing, accommodating and terminating employees
  • One-on-one sensitivity training
  • HR management advisor services
  • Workplace investigations

Alison is an experienced litigator who has attended hundreds of hearings and mediations, either as a lawyer representing her client or as a Vice-chair with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario. She has competently litigated matters until a final decision has been issued, and has also mediated matters to a successful resolution.

Alison is an experienced writer. As Vice-chair with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, Alison has issued over 600 written and reported decisions, as well as many unreported written directions, many on sensitive issues. She has authored many opinions and pleadings and, earlier in her career, wrote for a reporter series and collaborated on newspaper articles.

She has given numerous presentations on labour and employment matters, including human rights, to clients and groups, and at conferences.

Interesting Tidbit
Alison has been where few others have been: to the top of a nuclear reactor! While working as a summer student on the construction site of a nuclear station, she had the opportunity to tour the station while it was being built. Donning her hardhat, safety glasses, and safety shoes, she climbed up steep metal ladders and walked along the steel mesh cat walks at the top of (non-working) nuclear reactors to gaze down hundreds of meters to what would later become fuel bays. She stood close enough to the reactors to touch them!
